Why dehumidify/humidify

Humidity changes and this will effect your guitar. high humidity and low humidity both effects your guitar. Low humidity can be more damaging though. Your guitar is made from wood. The more wood, the more concern you should be. Being concerned will save you a visit to your local luthier and save you money.


Here are the effects:



High Humidity:

wood swells. this can cause tops to swell, action to change, glue joints to fail, neck angles to go bad, and finish to lift. This damage can be very costly.



Low Humidity

low humidity can cause sharp fret ends, loose frets, buzzing, change your neck relief and crack your top back or sides. It can wreak havoc. This damage will be very costly as well.


An instrument is happy between 45-55 Relative Humidity. To keep the humidity optimal you can keep your instrument in a hard case. Inside put a hygrometer to monitor the humidity. There are cheep ones and expensive ones that have wifi. Use a case humidifier when needed. Also, if needed humidify your room with a humidifier. If you find this is too much work, there are 2-6 month 2 way care systems you can buy that will keep the humidity in your case optimal.
